The price covers one 40-yard roll-off dumpster dropped where you want it, 30 days to fill it, pickup, and disposal of up to 5 tons of debris. Allowed debris: household junk, furniture, construction and remodel debris, roofing and yard waste.

Extra costs, only if they apply

• $50 per ton over 5 tons. The load is weighed at the disposal site.
• $8 per day if you keep it longer than 30 days.
• Items landfills charge extra for, like mattresses or tires, where they are accepted. See what can't go in.
• A city permit if the dumpster has to sit on the street. Not needed on your own driveway in most places.

Concrete, dirt, brick and other heavy debris are not part of this offer, because a load of rock weighs far more than 5 tons. Heavy debris is priced on its own.

Size and fit

The 40-yard is the biggest common roll-off. Its walls are about 8 feet high, taller than most people, so it is built for job sites where crews load through the rear door or with equipment. For homeowners, two smaller swaps are often easier than one 40.

Outside size about 22 ft long, 8 ft wide, 8 ft high. It holds about 12 pickup-truck loads. You need a flat spot about 22 feet long and 8 to 11 feet wide, plus room for the truck to back in.
