About the 20-yard
If you are not sure, a 20-yard is usually the safe pick. It is the same height as a 15 but longer, so it still loads easily over the side, and it holds the contents of most cleanouts and most single-layer roof tear-offs. It needs a full-length driveway spot or a street space.
Good for
- Whole-house or estate cleanouts
- Roof tear-offs on an average-size home
- Large remodels (several rooms)
- Big yard cleanups
- Flooring and carpet from a whole floor
Not the best fit for
Heavy debris like concrete and dirt, and new construction where a 30 or 40 is cheaper per yard.
Loading tips
- Measure your driveway: you need about 22 feet of length plus room for the truck to back in, and about 11 feet of width.
- Keep the doors at the back clear so you can walk in heavy items on a dolly.
- Roofing: weight runs out before space does. We match the allowance to your roof size.
Bigger or smaller?
A 15-yard holds about about 4 to 5 pickup loads; a 30-yard holds about about 9. If you are between two sizes, the bigger one usually costs less than a second haul. Compare all sizes.
20-yard dumpster questions
How big is a 20-yard dumpster?
Typically about 22 ft long, 8 ft wide, 4 ft high. It holds 20 cubic yards, roughly about 6 pickup-truck loads. Exact dimensions vary a little by hauler.
How much does a 20-yard dumpster cost?
Typically $375 to $650 for a 7-day rental, depending on your ZIP, the debris type and local disposal rates. That is an estimate; your quote gives one exact, all-in delivered price.
How much weight can a 20-yard dumpster hold?
The included weight allowance is typically 1 to 2 tons (some areas more). Going over is billed per ton at the local rate, usually around $50 to $125 per ton, and the rate is listed in your quote.
Can I put concrete or dirt in a 20-yard?
Not in most areas. Heavy debris goes in a 10-yard filled to a marked line, because a bigger box full of rock would be too heavy to lift or drive legally.
Will a 20-yard fit on my driveway?
You need a flat spot about 22 feet long and 8 to 11 feet wide, plus room for the truck to back in (roughly 60 feet in a straight line) and clear overhead space.
