What Goes Into a Dumpster Rental Price: Every Fee Explained
What a dumpster rental costs depends on your ZIP code, the size and what goes in, and most people rent a 20-yard. That one delivered number is built from five costs: the haul, disposal by the ton, the rental days, a permit if the box sits on the street, and the fees that only apply when something goes wrong. Once you can see the five parts, you can tell a fair quote from a padded one in a couple of minutes.
What each dumpster size includes
These are the typical weight allowances and capacities across US metro areas for a 7-day roll-off dumpster rental. Your quote has the exact price for your ZIP code. A high-cost metro, a heavy load or a month-long rental pushes a total up.
| Size | Weight included | Holds | Outside dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-yard | 1 to 2 tons | about 3 pickup loads | 12 x 8 x 3.5 ft |
| 15-yard | 1 to 2 tons | about 4 to 5 pickup loads | 16 x 8 x 4 ft |
| 20-yard | 1 to 2 tons (some areas more) | about 6 pickup loads | 22 x 8 x 4 ft |
| 30-yard | 3 to 4 tons | about 9 pickup loads | 22 x 8 x 6 ft |
| 40-yard | 3 to 4 tons | about 12 pickup loads | 22 x 8 x 8 ft |
Going up one size adds far less than a second haul, which costs a whole second rental. Our pricing page explains what each size includes, and the 20-yard dumpster guide covers the size most people end up with.
The five things inside one delivered price
A delivered price bundles five costs, and a good quote shows the rate behind each one.
1. The haul. This covers two truck trips, a driver, fuel and the box itself. A hauler 8 miles away prices a drop differently from one 40 miles out, which is why dumpster rental rates are quoted by ZIP code.
2. Disposal, by the ton. The disposal site weighs the load and charges per ton. Your rental includes an allowance, typically 1 to 2 tons on a 10 to 20-yard and 3 to 4 tons on a 30 or 40. Weight over it is billed per ton, and the rate follows the local landfill. Shingles, drywall and tile are the loads that most often go over.
3. Rental days. Most quotes are for 7 days. You can usually pick 3, 14 or 30 instead, and a 3-day rental is often cheaper. Extra days are billed at a daily rate, which varies from hauler to hauler. If the job is a Saturday, read about renting a dumpster for one day before you pay for a week.
4. The permit. You need one only if the box sits on a street, sidewalk or public alley. Your city sets the fee, usually as an application fee plus a daily, weekly or monthly rate, and some towns charge nothing. Your city's public works or right-of-way office lists the current fee. We can get the permit for you and add the city's fee to your invoice. A driveway placement needs none in most places.
5. Fees that depend on you. This covers per-item charges for mattresses, tires and non-refrigerant appliances where the disposal site accepts them, a trip fee if the truck can't place or collect the box, and a late-cancellation charge. With us, cancelling is free until the truck leaves, and your quote lists the trip fee and the late-cancellation charge. All of them belong in the quote before you book.
Worked examples: a 10-yard concrete job and a 20-yard cleanout
The examples below show how the parts above add up.
Take a 20-yard garage and basement cleanout. The quote lists the price for 7 days, a 2-ton allowance, the per-ton rate over it, the daily rate for extra days, and a per-item fee for each of two mattresses. It's a driveway placement, so there's no permit. With us, the rental price is charged the day before delivery.
The load weighs 2.4 tons at the scale, 0.4 tons over, so those 0.4 tons are billed at the per-ton rate after pickup, together with the two mattress fees and a copy of the weight ticket. The box is collected on day 7, so there are no extra days. Every rate in the final bill was on paper before the box arrived.
Now a 10-yard concrete patio. A 12 x 12 ft patio, 4 inches thick, works out to 144 sq ft x 0.33 ft x 145 lb per cubic foot of solid concrete, which is about 6,900 lb, or 3.5 tons. That's far past a 1 to 2 ton allowance, so it gets quoted as a clean heavy-debris load: a 10-yard filled to a marked line, at a flat price that often sits close to a standard 10-yard, because clean concrete is usually recycled instead of landfilled.
If you load only concrete, up to the line, you pay the heavy-debris price with no per-ton charge, because the fill line replaces the weight allowance. A bag of trash on top can get the load reclassified as mixed debris and billed per ton.
The table runs the same arithmetic for the other sizes.
| Size and job | Allowance in the quote | At the scale | Billed after pickup |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-yard, one-room cleanout, 7 days | 1.5 tons | 0.9 tons | Nothing |
| 15-yard, kitchen remodel, 7 days | 2 tons | 2.5 tons (stone counters) | 0.5 tons at the per-ton rate |
| 30-yard, estate cleanout, 14 days | 4 tons | 3.6 tons, kept 2 days past the rental | 2 extra days at the daily rate |
| 40-yard, light demolition, 7 days | 4 tons | 4.8 tons | 0.8 tons at the per-ton rate |
Why the same box costs more in one city than in another
Two prices for the same 20-yard can both be fair for their area. Four things account for the difference.
Landfill rates are local. The per-ton rate a disposal site charges varies widely across the country, and it feeds straight into the disposal part of your price.
Distance and competition matter too. In a metro with a dozen haulers and transfer stations all around town, the haul is short and prices get squeezed. In a rural county, the nearest hauler may be an hour away.
Then there's what's going in. A 20-yard of cardboard and a 20-yard of shingles are different jobs, because the first comes in under a ton and the second can pass 7 tons. A roofing quote carries a bigger allowance and a bigger price for that reason.
Timing is the last factor. Spring and summer are busy and demand jumps after storms, so asking for a same-week date in peak season leaves fewer haulers with a box free.
Fees that show up after pickup and how to avoid them
Three charges are billed after the box is gone, once the weight ticket is in, and you can usually avoid all of them.
- Overage is the one people run into most, billed per ton over the allowance at the rate in your quote. Avoid it by describing the load accurately when you ask for a price, especially anything dense, and by covering the box in rain. The overage fees per ton guide walks through the math by material.
- Extra days are billed at the daily rate in your quote. If a job might run 10 days, price both a 14-day rental and 7 days plus three extra, since either can be cheaper.
- Contamination comes from a banned item in the load, such as paint, a car battery or a fridge. The driver may leave the item behind or remove it for a fee, or the disposal site's handling charge is passed on.
Two more are tied to the truck's visits: the trip fee for a blocked spot or an overfilled box, and the fee for cancelling after the truck has left. If a quote mentions neither, ask in writing before you book. The hidden dumpster fees guide lists every charge that can appear on an invoice and the wording that should sit next to each one.
Flat-rate vs variable pricing: which one you are being quoted
Dumpsters are priced in one of two ways.
A flat rate is one fixed price per size, with the allowance and the overage and daily rates fixed too. It usually bundles delivery, pickup, a set number of rental days and a set weight allowance, and heavy debris is priced on its own. A flat rate is simple, and for an ordinary household or remodel load it's often a good deal.
Variable, or quoted, pricing is worked out for your ZIP, debris and dates, with the allowance matched to the job. It tends to win when the load is heavy, the job only needs a few days, or local disposal is cheap. Either way, your quote shows the price once you enter your ZIP code.
Then there's the teaser price: a very low headline that turns out to mean a 1-ton allowance, a 3-day window and a steep per-ton rate, with delivery billed separately. The cheap dumpster rental guide explains what that small print usually hides.
How to compare two quotes line by line
Check these lines in order, and ask in writing for any that are missing before you compare prices.
- Size, with dimensions.
- Rental days, and the rate for extra days.
- Weight allowance in tons, and the per-ton rate over it.
- Per-item fees for anything you know is going in.
- Permit: who pulls it and who pays.
- Trip fee and cancellation terms.
- What is excluded: heavy debris, prohibited items, placement limits.
The allowance line usually matters more than the headline price. Say quote A has the lower price, a 1-ton allowance and a steep per-ton rate, and quote B costs more up front with a 2-ton allowance and a lower per-ton rate. For a half-full cleanout at 0.9 tons, neither goes over, so A is cheaper. For a full 20-yard of mixed junk at 2.4 tons, A bills 1.4 tons at its steep rate and B bills only 0.4 tons at its lower one, so with the same box and the same load, B can now win.
Frequently asked questions
What affects the price of a 20-yard dumpster?
Most 20-yard rentals come with 7 days and 1 to 2 tons included, and the price depends on your ZIP code, the debris and the dates. Ours comes with 30 days and 3 tons included, where we offer it, and your quote shows the price.
Does the price include disposal?
Yes, up to the weight allowance written in your quote. Only weight over that line is billed, at the per-ton rate in the quote, once the disposal site has weighed the load.
Is it cheaper to rent a bigger dumpster?
A bigger box usually works out cheaper per cubic yard. A 30-yard costs more than a 20 in total, but one bigger box almost always beats two hauls of a smaller one. The exception is heavy debris, which goes in a 10-yard whatever the volume.
Why can't I get an exact price online?
The exact number depends on which haulers serve your address, their disposal site's per-ton rate, your debris and your dates. We check those and send one delivered price, usually within 1 to 2 business hours.
When do I pay, and what if I cancel?
Nothing is charged when you book. The rental price is charged the day before delivery, and usage charges like extra weight are billed after pickup. Changes and cancellations are free, with a full refund, until the truck leaves for your delivery, even on the day. After that, a cancellation fee applies and the rest is refunded. Moving to another date is always free.
