12 Yard Dumpster: Does It Exist and What to Rent Instead
A 12 yard dumpster is a real box, but a regional one. Some local haulers run a 12 in place of a 10 or a 15. It isn't one of the common roll-off sizes, though, and we don't rent one. If a 12 is what you had in mind, the practical choice is a 10-yard or a 15-yard, and the weight allowance usually matters more than the couple of cubic yards between them.
What a 12-yard dumpster is and where you'll find one
The common roll-off sizes are 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yards, and the how to choose a size guide works with those five. A 12 only turns up when a local hauler's own fleet includes a box sized between a 10 and a 15. Yardage is a loose label more than an exact measurement, so one company's 12 can be close to another company's 10 or 15.
If you see a 12 yard dumpster rental advertised, it's usually from a local hauler. We don't list the size, since we stick to the five standard ones. Tell us what you're throwing out when you request a price and we'll quote the 10 or 15 that fits, in writing, before you book.
Typical 12-yard dimensions and capacity
There's no standard spec sheet for a 12, so treat these as rough figures and get the exact numbers from the hauler that offers one.
| Spec | Typical 12-yard figure |
|---|---|
| Length | usually between a 10 and a 15, roughly 12 to 14 ft |
| Width | about 7.5 to 8 ft, like most roll-offs |
| Height | roughly 3.5 to 4.5 ft |
| Holds | about 3 to 4 pickup loads |
Run the arithmetic on a 12 x 8 x 4 ft box and you get 384 cubic feet, a little over 14 cubic yards, which shows how loose the "12" is. In practice a 12 sits between our 10-yard (12 x 8 x 3.5 ft) and our 15-yard (16 x 8 x 4 ft), with walls low enough to load over the side.
What sets a 12-yard dumpster price
There's no national 12 yard dumpster price. Where a local hauler runs one, expect it to price in or near the 10 and 15-yard sizes in the same area, for 7 days with 1 to 2 tons included. Our 10-yard and 15-yard each come with a 30-day rental and 3 tons included, and your quote shows the price once you enter your ZIP code. If a 12 is quoted well above or below a 10 or 15 near you, check the weight allowance and per-ton rate before you compare.
10-yard or 15-yard: which replaces it for your job
Most people asking for a 12 have one of two problems: a pile slightly bigger than a 10 handles, or a driveway too short for a 15. Sort out the pile first, then check the driveway.
| Your pile | Pickup loads | Rent this instead | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| One room, a small garage, a bathroom gut | about 3 | 10-yard dumpster | Close to a 12 in size, with 3.5 ft walls, and the only size for concrete, dirt or brick |
| A packed single-car garage, a kitchen tear-out | about 4 | 15-yard | A 10 will overflow, and a 15 leaves room for what you find later |
| A two-car garage, a basement, a deck in pieces | about 4 to 5 | 15-yard dumpster | This is the job a 15 is sized for |
| Anything with tile, plaster, shingles or wet debris | any | 10 or 15 by volume, with the allowance matched | Weight decides, see below |
If the driveway is the problem, measure it. A 15 needs about 16 ft of flat, hard surface plus roughly 60 ft of straight approach for the truck, and a 10 needs about 12 ft. With 14 ft between the garage door and the sidewalk, you have a 10-yard driveway whatever the pile says, so the answer is a 10 with a swap, or a street placement with a permit. The size calculator turns a room count into a starting size, though it can't measure the driveway for you.
Weight allowance differences that matter more than 2 yards
Comparing a 12 yard vs 15 yard dumpster on volume alone tells you little, because 3 cubic yards is about one pickup load. The money is in the weight allowance. Most rentals include disposal up to a set weight, typically 1 to 2 tons for a 10, 12 or 15, and weight over it is billed per ton, at a rate that follows the local landfill.
Two haulers can both offer a "12-yard" and include 1 ton with one and 2 tons with the other. On a heavy load that gap is a full ton of overage on the invoice, which is often more than the price difference between neighboring sizes. The EPA puts loose household junk at about 250 to 300 lb per cubic yard, so a 12 of clutter weighs 1.5 to 1.8 tons, fine on a 2-ton allowance and over on a 1-ton one. Drywall, at 467 lb per yard, fills the same box at about 2.8 tons, which is over on either.
So the question to ask about a 12, a 10 or a 15 is how many tons come with it and what each ton over costs. If the 12 comes with less weight than the 15, the 15 usually works out cheaper for anything dense. Our 15-yard includes 3 tons, enough for that 2.8-ton load of drywall, and your quote shows the per-ton rate beyond that.
Odd sizes you may also see: 6, 8, 25 and 35 yards
A 6 or 8-yard is usually a lidded front-load bin, the kind behind a restaurant, serviced on a weekly route and a poor fit for furniture or remodel debris. The small front-load dumpsters guide covers the 2 to 8-yard range. A 25-yard is a regional step between the 20 and the 30, and a 35 sits between the 30 and the 40. The approach for all of them is the same as for the 12: size the job by pickup loads and tons, then take whichever box covers both.
Frequently asked questions
How big is a 12 yard dumpster?
It depends on the hauler, since there's no national standard. Most fall between a 10 and a 15, roughly 12 to 14 ft long, 7.5 to 8 ft wide and 3.5 to 4.5 ft tall, and hold about 3 to 4 pickup loads. Use the hauler's own dimensions for a driveway check.
What affects the price of a 12 yard dumpster?
Where a local hauler offers one, the price usually sits in or near what a 10 or 15 costs in the same area, for 7 days with 1 to 2 tons included. The weight allowance moves the real cost more than the box size does. We rent the 10 and 15 instead, each with 30 days and 3 tons included, and your quote shows the price for your ZIP code.
Is a 12 yard dumpster big enough for a garage cleanout?
For a single-car garage that isn't packed, usually. A packed one is closer to a 15, and a packed two-car garage is more of a 15 to 20-yard job. An overfilled box can't be hauled, so when in doubt go up a size, since one bigger box costs less than a second haul.
Can I put concrete in a 12 yard dumpster?
Only if the hauler rates that box for heavy debris. Many haulers, us included, send concrete, dirt, brick and rock to a 10-yard filled to a marked line. Broken concrete weighs about 860 lb per loose cubic yard, so a 12 filled level would be over 5 tons.
We don't rent a 12-yard, but tell us what's going in and we'll quote the 10 or 15 that holds your pile, with the weight allowance in writing. Get my price.
